A walk along Rambla Nova

The Art of Doing Nothing

In Tarragona, walking the Rambla is not really about getting somewhere.

It is about walking slowly, looking around, stopping for a coffee and simply letting the city happen around you.

This is not a route for collecting monuments. It is an easy walk through everyday Tarragona, from the Mediterranean to the city's most familiar promenade.

Start at the Mediterranean

Before you leave, touch the iron.

Begin at the Balcó del Mediterrani, where Rambla Nova opens towards the sea.

Before walking away, do what Tarragonins call tocar ferro: touch the iron railing and look out over the Mediterranean. It is one of those tiny local rituals that belongs completely to Tarragona.

Touch the railing, look at the sea, and you have already done something very Tarragona.

Fer la Rambla

Walk without needing a destination.

Continue inland beneath the trees. Look at the façades, terraces, shops and people around you. For locals, this is simply part of everyday life: walking up, walking down, meeting someone, stopping somewhere and carrying on.

If you feel like going further, continue towards the Font del Centenari and then turn back towards the sea. There is no need to rush.

A small detour

Step inside the Mercat Central.

If the market is open, leave Rambla Nova for a few minutes and walk into the Mercat Central and Plaça Corsini.

You do not need to buy anything. Walk through the stalls, see what local people are shopping for and enjoy a glimpse of Tarragona's everyday rhythm.

Sometimes a market tells you more about a city than another monument ever could.

Bokoto

RAMBLA NOVA, 22 · TARRAGONA
My recommendation

Finish at Bokoto.

If the walk happens to end around lunch or dinner, this is where I would stop.

Bokoto is a Japanese restaurant on Rambla Nova. I like the contrast: a very Tarragona walk followed by a completely different atmosphere at the table.

Why I include it

It fits the spirit of this walk perfectly: no complicated plan, just enjoy the city and stop when you feel like it.

One last thought

You do not need to discover everything. Sometimes simply walking through a city is the best way to understand it.
