I love Tarragona and I would never tell you to come here without seeing at least a little of its Roman history. But I also know something very important: travelling with children changes the rules.

Sometimes adults would happily spend another hour exploring an archaeological site while the children have already decided that what they really need is the sea, an ice cream or something they can climb.

Tarragona makes that surprisingly easy. Roman ruins, beaches, Mediterranean forest and family adventures are all close enough to mix together without turning the holiday into a timetable.

You don't have to choose between a cultural trip and a family holiday. Here, the two can live very happily together.

Jungle Trek

Let the adventure begin

If your children need to move after sightseeing, Jungle Trek is one of my favourite options.

Hidden among the trees in Tamarit, there are circuits, hanging bridges, obstacles and zip lines surrounded by Mediterranean forest.

And when everyone has had enough adrenaline, some of Tarragona's loveliest beaches are just nearby.

Discover the sea

Dive into the Mediterranean

Give a child a mask and snorkel and suddenly the beach becomes a completely different place.

Tarragona's clear coves and rocky areas are wonderful for discovering small fish and the underwater Mediterranean world.

You can keep it beautifully simple and snorkel from the shore, or look for organised snorkelling and introductory diving experiences with local diving centres.

For older children and teenagers, a first diving experience can become one of those holiday memories they talk about for years.

03 Hidden beaches

Find your perfect spot

You don't need to book an activity every day. Take water, something to eat, swimming things and snorkelling masks and head towards Platja Llarga and the Bosc de la Marquesa .

The path towards Cala Fonda — often called Waikiki locally — crosses Mediterranean forest before reaching one of Tarragona's most beautiful natural stretches of coast.

For me, this is exactly the kind of family day that needs very little planning and can end up being one of the most memorable.

Roman Tarragona

Step back in time

Tarragona was once Tarraco , one of the most important Roman cities in Hispania.

But children don't need all the dates and names to enjoy it.

Walk inside the Roman Circus. Look down into the Amphitheatre and imagine the crowd. Climb the old city walls. Search for inscriptions, strange stones and hidden corners.

Give them things to find rather than things to memorise.

Tarraco was one of the great Roman cities of Hispania — a small fact to spark curiosity, not a history lesson.

For a really special day out

Not every day needs to be a big excursion. But if the children get to choose one special day during the holiday, these will probably be high on their list.

Very close to Tarragona, with attractions ranging from children's rides and shows to some seriously impressive roller coasters.

Don't plan anything important afterwards. PortAventura is quite enough for one day.

In La Pineda, close to Tarragona, with children's areas, pools and water attractions ranging from gentle to decidedly less gentle.

A particularly convincing option on the hottest days of summer.

Karting

Junior, senior and two-seater karts make Tarraco Karting a useful option for families with children of different ages.

And yes, parents usually become surprisingly competitive too.

Swim with giant bluefin tuna

This one isn't in Tarragona city, but I include it because it is genuinely different.

From L'Ametlla de Mar , Tuna Tour takes you out by catamaran to the bluefin tuna pools offshore.

And yes: you can get into the water and snorkel among the tuna.

These aren't tiny aquarium fish. Seeing huge bluefin tuna swimming below you is quite an experience, for adults as well as children.

Slow days

Time for what really matters

Don't feel that you have to fill every day.

Children often remember surprisingly simple things: the beach where they found a strange shell, the enormous fish they saw while snorkelling, an ice cream after dinner or the day they finally beat Mum or Dad at karting.

Tarragona gives you plenty to see, but it also gives families something just as valuable: space to slow down and enjoy being together.

A final thought

A family holiday doesn't need a timetable

Choose a few adventures. Discover a little of Tarragona's history. Swim in the Mediterranean. Leave a morning empty.

And let the children choose sometimes too.

The best family holidays are very rarely the ones where you managed to see everything.
