On the hottest summer days, Tarragona does not need to be explored all at once.
Wait for the light to soften. The streets fill again, the stone begins to cool and the Mediterranean becomes part of the evening.

Tarragona after sunset is not simply the daytime city with the lights switched on.
Roman stones, medieval streets, terraces and the sea begin to belong to the same walk.
You can cross more than two thousand years of history without entering a single monument.
And there is no real need for a plan.
Begin

Wait until the stone begins to cool
Tarragona can be intensely warm in July and August. The old stone absorbs the heat throughout the day and slowly gives it back as evening arrives.
Instead of exhausting yourself during the hottest hours, rest for a while and come outside again when the light begins to soften.
Around the Cathedral and the narrow streets of the Part Alta, this is when the city begins to feel alive again.
Walk

Walk through 2,000 years without entering a monument
Start around the Cathedral and simply wander downhill.
Pass Carrer Merceria, Plaça del Fòrum and Plaça del Rei. Roman walls and medieval buildings sit beside ordinary homes, restaurants and little squares.
By night, even when the monuments themselves are closed, Tarragona's history is still everywhere around you.

Sea

Reach the Mediterranean at blue hour
Continue towards Rambla Nova and the Balcó del Mediterrani.
From here Tarragona suddenly opens onto the sea. Below you are Miracle Beach, the railway and the Roman Amphitheatre, with the Mediterranean stretching behind them.
Around sunset and blue hour, the relationship between Tarragona's ancient stone and the sea becomes especially beautiful.
Continue for a while along Passeig de les Palmeres. On warm evenings the sea breeze can make a surprising difference.

Dinner outside in the Part Alta
By around 21:00 or 21:30, the old town has changed completely. The terraces are full again and this is the moment to find a table outside.
These are three places I like for a summer evening.
Espai Vi
A particularly pleasant setting for eating outside, right in Plaça del Fòrum.
Sit on the terrace with a glass of wine while one of Tarragona's historic squares continues around you.
El Llagut
A Mediterranean restaurant in one of the most atmospheric corners of the Part Alta.
Its setting by Plaça del Rei makes it especially easy to continue the evening on foot afterwards.

Take an ice cream to Plaça del Rei
After dinner, don't hurry back.
Pick up an ice cream and take it to Plaça del Rei. Sit for a while or simply wander around the square beneath the illuminated stone façades.
No monument to visit. No timetable. Nowhere else you particularly need to be.
Just Tarragona, after dark.
The monuments may be closed, but the city does not close with them. Sometimes Tarragona makes more sense once you stop trying to visit it and simply start walking.
